Value of its calligraphy
Mao Gong ding's inscription, as a model of the late Western Zhou Dynasty inscriptions on bronze, shows the typical style of ancient calligraphy and a rational aesthetic trend. Its posture shows the highly mature style of the large seal script, which is thin, vigorous, slender, untiring, and graceful. The structure is loose and clear in both vertical and horizontal directions, arranged in a neat and natural manner without any affectation, presenting a naive and artful artistic atmosphere. Through the perfect layout of writing in Mao Gong ding, it shows that the writing in the late Western Zhou Dynasty has formed forms and laws with proficient writing skills and techniques of expression.
Mao Gong ding's inscriptions are round, precise and strict, and the lines are muddy, clumsy and simple. The center is the main brush. In specific operations, it should be to enter against the front, pull and move, with the brush included in the lift, and the front in the painting as opposed to the end; The ending of the pen may not necessarily be at the center of the pen, but simply by lightly pressing the pen to stop, which is known as the 'flat out method'. Therefore, when writing, special attention should be paid to displaying the richness, clumsiness, and strength of the lines. But when expressing changes in brushwork, one should not pretend to have a trembling pen, otherwise it will be difficult to reflect its true meaning and lifeless. So Mao Gong ding provides a good copy template for future generations.
