Shanghai Museum Launches the Special Exhibition of "Going with the Times - Spreading and Expanding the Skills of Gold and Stone"
Gold and stone is an important document carrier in History of China. A large number of precious historical materials have been recorded since the pre Qin period. In order to preserve, study and disseminate the contents of these materials, a simple and efficient "copying" technology has evolved - the spreading technology. The paper is tightly covered on the gold and stone objects, and the objects' graphics, decorations, inscriptions and other contents are "faithfully" copied onto the paper by the ink spreading technique. The application scope of Jinshi Chuan Tuo is very wide, and it is still active in fields such as archaeology and cultural heritage until now.
This exhibition showcases 37 pieces/group of cultural relics, including some famous works and masterpieces. Some rare rubbings are also displayed in contrast to the original artifacts collected by the Shanghai Museum, bringing a visual collision between ink shadow and auspicious gold.
The Rubbings of Simu Wufang Ding in the exhibition hall are one of the first complete rubbings produced by Simu Wufang Ding after its excavation in 1939. Simuwen square tripod (also known as "Houmuwufang tripod") is a bronze ware of the late Shang Dynasty. It has a magnificent and powerful shape. It is the largest and heaviest ancient bronze ware unearthed in China and is now in the National Museum of China. Rubbings have stitching marks, using the method of paper splitting and carving. The various parts of the square cauldron are first carved out in sequence, and then mounted and assembled. This is also a common expression technique in the inheritance of gold and stone artifacts.
In the late Shang Dynasty, the inscriptions on cow scapula, which was the Scapula of the cow used by the king of Shang for divination, were engraved with oracle bone inscriptions on both sides of the upper part. The content of the inscriptions was divination, and the characters were painted with cinnabar. After the excavation of oracle bones, they often break into pieces and become scattered. Ink rubbing can make the lettering black and white, with delicate and distinct features. Scholars can use rubbings to patch and restore them. This edition of Shanghai Museum bones (upper part) can be combined with Palace Museum bones (middle part) and Tsinghua University bones (lower part) to recover rare historical materials such as a car accident record of the Shang King, a rainbow record of the Shang Dynasty, and so on, which are very precious.
The Qing Dynasty's "Jiezhai Collection of Ancient Paintings" is displayed in contrast to some of the original artifacts, giving the audience a sense of immersive experience. "Greeting Zhai" was the name of Zhai of Wu Dacheng, a epigraphy scholar in the late Qing Dynasty. The "Lianzhai Collection of Ancient Paintings" is composed of paintings and ink inscriptions. The first volume was painted by Ren Xun, and the second volume was written by Hu Qinhan. It collects the full form and inscription rubbings of the Wu family's collection of gold and stone artifacts, providing a comprehensive overview of the shape, decoration, and inscriptions of the objects, which has extremely high academic reference value. Deng Bo gui cover and Xian Gui cover in the rubbings are all in the Shanghai Museum, and the original can be compared with the rubbings.
Chu Xiaobo, curator of the Shanghai Museum, said that the museum is an important place to protect and inherit human civilization. Since its establishment, the Shanghai Museum has applied the traditional techniques of gold and stone inheritance to bronze ware, ancient characters and other fields, and believes that this exhibition can bring unique experience to the audience on the ancient techniques of inheritance.
