Moving "Bronze Weapons" of Xia Dynasty
China's ancient weapons have a long history of development. From the prehistoric primitive weapons era to the bronze weapons era of Xia, Shang and Zhou dynasties, the iron weapons era of the Qin, Han, Six Dynasties, Sui, Tang and Five Dynasties, to the era of Cold weapon and firearms used together since the Song Dynasty and the Song Dynasty, each progress is related to the rise and fall of the dynasty, the rise and fall of the country, and the separation and reunion of the country. It is engraved with the development process of ancient China's politics, economy and culture.
The Shanghai Museum has a large collection of bronzes, including three generations of fine bronze weapons. These bronze weapons carrying a profound history not only reflect the advanced bronze manufacturing technology and unique aesthetic sentiment of ancient China, but also serve as important material evidence for the "great events of the state, sacrificing to the military" in the pre Qin period.
Archaeological discoveries about bronze weapons are, first of all, the specimens unearthed from Erlitou culture, which are mainly unearthed from the remains of the late Erlitou culture. The obtained bronze weapons include Ge, Qi and Cluster, which belong to the main types of offensive weapons - fighting weapons and long-range weapons. It can be considered that in the Xia Dynasty, which is said to be the 21st to 16th century BC, the ancient Chinese army was already equipped with a complete range of bronze weapons.
The square tomahawk inlaid with cross patterns is the earliest bronze weapon in Shanghai Museum. The body of the axe is in the shape of a square axe, with a wide and thick texture, and a straight blade. There is a large circular hole in the center of the axe, surrounded by a cross shaped pattern for two weeks, with six on the inside and twelve on the outside, which can overlap to form a floral pattern. Around the big round hole and around the flower pattern, circles are arranged around each ring, and Turquoise is inlaid in the groove. According to similar information found in the third period of Erlitou, it is designated as the late Xia Dynasty.
The bronze axe is a broad bodied axe. According to the most basic form characteristics - the installation method of the handle, it can be divided into three types: clamp type, horizontal hole type (hole for installing the handle on the qi ó ng axe) type, and vertical hole type. The square axe inlaid with cross pattern is a bronze axe with a clip inside. The clip inside axe originated from the stone axe in the Neolithic of China, and is a token of military commanding power and the right to kill and punish.
