Bronze statues and their smelting and casting technology

About bronze statues

Bronze statues have a rich history and are considered significant artistic and cultural artifacts in many societies. Bronze, a copper alloy, was widely used for sculptures due to its durability and malleability.

Characteristics of them

  1. Material: Bronze statues are typically cast using the bronze alloy, which is primarily composed of copper with small amounts of other metals, such as tin or zinc. This alloy gives the sculpture strength while allowing for intricate details.

  2. Artistic Styles: Bronze statues can be found in various artistic styles, reflecting different cultures and time periods. Examples include classical Greek and Roman sculptures, realistic Renaissance figures, dynamic Baroque artworks, or more contemporary abstract and modernist designs.

  3. Subject Matter: Bronze statues can depict diverse subject matter, from mythological gods and goddesses to historical figures, religious icons, animals, or symbolic representations. They often convey cultural, political, or artistic messages.

  4. Techniques: Creating a bronze statue involves several stages, including sculpting the original model in clay or wax, making molds, pouring molten bronze into the molds, and finishing touches through polishing and patination (applying a colored finish).

  5. Notable Examples: The world is home to numerous famous bronze statues. Some notable examples include Michelangelo's "David" in Florence, Italy; Rodin's "The Thinker" in Paris, France; the "Statue of Liberty" in New York, United States; and the Shakyamuni Buddha statue at Leshan Giant Buddha in China.

Bronze statues continue to be a captivating art form that preserves history, showcases exceptional craftsmanship, and evokes powerful emotions and cultural significance.

Casting of bronzze statues

Block norm method

The block mold method, or soil mold method, was first adopted by the ancestors of the Shang and Zhou Dynasties and was the most widely used bronze casting method in the entire Bronze Age. The method steps are as follows:

1. Moulding

Modules are also known as mother modules or working modules. Its raw materials can be pottery, wood, bamboo, bone, stone, and other materials, and already cast bronze can also be used as models. The specific material selection depends on the geometric shape of the casting, and the convenience of pattern carving and molding should be considered. Generally speaking, slender and flat knives and cutting molds can be made from bamboo or wood; Smaller bird and animal forms can be carved into molds using bones and stones; For heavy and relatively large shaped Ding and Yi vessels, clay can be used as a mold for shaping.

2. Model

Proper clay materials should be selected and prepared for molding, with the main components being soil and sand. Apply mud to the outside of the mold to remove the mold components used to form the outer contour of the casting. In the casting process, the mold is called the outer mold, which needs to be divided into several pieces to be removed from the mold; In addition to the outer mold, a mold with a volume equivalent to the inner cavity of the container, usually called a core, or a heart-shaped or inner mold, should also be made of clay; Then fit the inner and outer molds together, and the gap in the middle is called the cavity, whose spacing is the thickness of the cast object. Generally speaking, the clay used for exterior molding has a higher content of soil (preferably clay), while the clay used for core making has a higher content of sand and coarser particles. Fan's soil preparation is extremely meticulous. The collected soil needs to be dried, crushed, sieved, mixed well, and added with a certain proportion of water to form a moderately soft and hard soil. It is then repeatedly beaten, rubbed, and soaked for a long time to make it qualitative. This kind of well made clay can only be easily used when flipping.

In the process of molding, while mastering the water content of the mixed mud, other things must also be mixed, such as grass and wood chips, grass feed, burnt earth powder, charcoal powder, or other organic matter. Why is this? After forming, Fan needs to undergo high-temperature roasting. If Fan is unable to withstand burning and changes its shape during this process, the bronze objects shaped by Fan will also take shape. These materials, which are not easy to take shape at high temperatures, can greatly reduce shrinkage to maintain the original shape of the objects, facilitate breathability, and avoid cracking due to drying and roasting after molding.

From the excavation situation, pottery fans are the most common. The clay content of the pottery fan can be higher, and its surface must also be fine and solid in order to carve patterns on it. After molding, the clay mold should slowly dry at room temperature, and the patterns should be carved when the dryness is appropriate. For patterns with a rigorous and standardized layout, they are usually first drafted with a color pen on a plain tire and then meticulously carved. The patterns that protrude from the surface are then molded with clay and carved on top of it. After the clay mold is made, it must be placed in the kiln and baked into a ceramic mold before it can be used for flipping.

Flipping the mold block from the mold is the central link of mold casting technology, which requires a high level of skill. For simpler solid objects such as knives, knives, arrowheads, etc., the two combined models can handle it easily, requiring only two outer models to be reproduced from the model. Compared to the simple production of the aforementioned objects, the process of manufacturing hollow containers appears much more complex. In the process of flipping the model.
